NICHE 1 NICHE 2 NICHE 3 NICHE 4 NICHE 5 ───────── ───────── ───────── ───────── ───────── Niche name: ________ ________ ________ ________ ________ D1: Demand [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] D2: Rate ceiling [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] D3: Competition [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] D4: Skill match [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] D5: Enjoyment [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] ───────── ───────── ───────── ───────── ───────── TOTAL (out of 25): [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SECTION 3: SCORING GUIDE ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 20–25 points STRONG NICHE — pursue it. Validate with the 90-day test. This is a go signal. 15–19 points SOLID NICHE — test it. Address any dimensions scoring 2 or below before committing fully. Usually the fix is spending 90 days building the missing proof or skill. 10–14 points TEST IT FIRST — land 1 paid project before going all-in. Something meaningful is missing. Identify which dimension is lowest and address it before pivoting your entire positioning. Under 10 RECONSIDER — significant issues in multiple areas. Either the niche is wrong, the timing is wrong, or you need substantially more skill development first. Don't abandon it forever — put it in a "revisit in 12 months" column. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SECTION 4: TIE-BREAKER QUESTIONS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ If two niches score within 2 points of each other, answer these to decide: 1. Which niche could you talk about for an hour without preparation? (This is the niche you'll be good at marketing — you'll never run out of content, case study framing, or pitch angles.) Answer: ___________________________________________________________________ 2. Which niche has clients who hire again and again (retainer potential)? (Recurring revenue is 10x easier to build in some niches than others. Email marketing, SEO, and social media management are retainer-friendly. Brand identity design is usually project-by-project.) Answer: ___________________________________________________________________ 3. Which niche has a clear "next level" that would double your rates? (The best niches have a visible progression path: entry-level to mid-level to senior specialist. You want to be able to see 5 years out.) Answer: ___________________________________________________________________ 4. If you had to introduce yourself at a conference in this niche, which introduction would feel most authentic? (Authenticity in positioning translates directly to conversion. The niche you can own genuinely is the one you'll close with.) Answer: ___________________________________________________________________ 5. In which niche do you already know 3+ potential clients by name? (The fastest path to your first niche client is someone who already knows and trusts you. The niche closest to your existing network is almost always the right place to start.) Answer: ___________________________________________________________________ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SECTION 5: NICHE COMMITMENT CHECKLIST ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Before you consider yourself "established" in a niche, you should be able to check all three of these: [ ] 3 paid projects completed in this niche Not spec work, not free work, not adjacent work — 3 paying clients specifically in this niche. This gives you enough proof to pitch confidently and enough experience to know the niche's real patterns. [ ] Consistent referrals from within the niche At least 2 unprompted referrals from niche clients or niche contacts. Referrals signal that your reputation is building within the community — that people associate you with this specific type of work. [ ] Known for it in at least 1 community You've been recognized, quoted, or referred within at least one community (LinkedIn group, Slack community, subreddit, Discord, or industry association) as the person who does [your niche]. This is the clearest signal that your positioning has landed. Niche you're committing to: ___________________________________________________ Date you started the 90-day test: ____________________________________________ Review date (90 days later): _________________________________________________ Notes: ________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ More free resources: solostack.madethis.app/resources SoloStack templates — done-for-you invoices, proposals, SOPs, and contracts solostack.madethis.app/lp/freelance-templates ================================================================================
