Maximum possible score: 25 points. NICHE CANDIDATE: _______________________________________ FACTOR 1 — MARKET SIZE Does this niche have enough potential clients to build a sustainable business? 1 = Very small (under 500 potential clients globally) 2 = Small (500–2,000 potential clients) 3 = Moderate (2,000–10,000 potential clients) 4 = Large (10,000–100,000 potential clients) 5 = Very large (100,000+ potential clients globally) Your score: _____ / 5 Notes: _________________________________________________ FACTOR 2 — YOUR EXPERIENCE How much hands-on experience do you have in this area? 1 = None — completely new territory 2 = Minimal — read about it, no client work 3 = Some — 1–3 relevant projects or 1–2 years industry background 4 = Solid — 4+ relevant projects or 3+ years relevant experience 5 = Strong — deep domain expertise, clear proof points Your score: _____ / 5 Notes: _________________________________________________ FACTOR 3 — YOUR INTEREST How genuinely interested are you in this niche long-term? 1 = Not interested at all — purely chasing money 2 = Mildly interested — could take it or leave it 3 = Moderately interested — wouldn't mind doing this for 2+ years 4 = Quite interested — would actively seek out this work 5 = Passionate — could talk about this for hours; already do Your score: _____ / 5 Notes: _________________________________________________ FACTOR 4 — COMPETITION LEVEL How crowded is this niche with freelancers offering the same service? (Note: more competition can signal higher demand — use judgment) 1 = Oversaturated — hundreds of specialists, hard to stand out 2 = Very competitive — dozens of established players 3 = Competitive — healthy competition, still room to enter 4 = Moderate — limited specialist supply relative to demand 5 = Low — undersupplied niche with clear demand signals Your score: _____ / 5 Notes: _________________________________________________ FACTOR 5 — INCOME POTENTIAL What is the realistic earning potential for specialists in this niche? 1 = Low ($20–$40/hr or $500–$1,500/project typical) 2 = Below average ($40–$60/hr or $1,500–$3,000/project typical) 3 = Average ($60–$90/hr or $3,000–$6,000/project typical) 4 = Above average ($90–$150/hr or $6,000–$15,000/project typical) 5 = High ($150+/hr or $15,000+/project realistic for specialists) Your score: _____ / 5 Notes: _________________________________________________ TOTAL SCORE: _____ / 25 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SCORING THRESHOLDS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 20–25 points = GO DEEP Strong signal. This niche is worth a full 90-day commitment. Update your positioning, pitch it exclusively, and build your portfolio. 13–19 points = TEST IT Potential is there but gaps exist. Identify your weakest factor. Run a 45-day test: pitch 10 prospects, run 3 discovery calls. Reassess before committing fully. Under 12 points = LOOK ELSEWHERE The combination of low scores signals meaningful risk. Does not mean the niche is impossible — but you should stress-test your assumptions before investing time here. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ PART 2: 10 VALIDATION QUESTIONS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Answer these BEFORE fully committing to a niche. Honest answers now save months of wasted effort. [ ] 1. Can you find 20 potential clients on LinkedIn right now? Search "[your target client type]" on LinkedIn People or Companies. If you can't find 20 in 10 minutes, the niche may be too narrow. [ ] 2. Are there communities, subreddits, or Slack groups for this niche? Existing communities = existing demand + free market research. Search Reddit, Facebook Groups, and Slack directories. [ ] 3. Are clients in this niche actively hiring on job boards? Check Upwork, LinkedIn Jobs, and We Work Remotely for relevant listings. Active job postings = budget exists for this type of work. [ ] 4. Can you find 3 freelancers already earning well in this space? Look on LinkedIn, Upwork, and personal websites. If others are thriving, the niche is validated — and you can learn from their positioning before you start. [ ] 5. Do clients in this niche have recurring needs (not one-time)? Recurring problems = retainer potential and repeat business. One-time purchases make pipeline management much harder. [ ] 6. Is the client type financially able to pay professional rates? Enterprise SaaS pays $5,000+ for a project. Local hair salons don't. Know who you're targeting and what their budget reality is. [ ] 7. Do you have (or can you quickly build) at least 1–2 portfolio examples? Even spec work, personal projects, or pro bono work counts. "No portfolio" is a solvable problem — assess how long it will take to fix. [ ] 8. Can you describe the top 3 problems clients in this niche have? If you can articulate their pain better than they can, they'll hire you. If you can't answer this right now, you need more research time. [ ] 9. Does this niche have a clear "watering hole" — a place clients congregate? Conferences, associations, publications, LinkedIn groups, subreddits. If you can't identify where they gather, outreach becomes very difficult. [ ] 10. Can you commit to this niche for 90 days without second-guessing? Niche success requires consistency. If you're already looking for exits, the niche (or your commitment to it) needs more examination. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ PART 3: NICHE STATEMENT FORMULA ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ THE FORMULA: "I help [specific client type] achieve [specific outcome] using [your method/skill]." 5 FILLED EXAMPLES: 1. "I help SaaS companies reduce trial-to-paid churn using onboarding email sequences." (Service: email copywriting | Industry: SaaS | Outcome: reduced churn) 2. "I help e-commerce brands increase average order value using post-purchase email flows." (Service: email marketing | Industry: e-commerce | Outcome: higher AOV) 3. Test: Can a stranger read this in 5 seconds and know (a) if they're your client, and (b) what result you deliver? If not, make it more specific. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ PART 4: 90-DAY NICHE TRANSITION TIMELINE ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ DAYS 1–7: FOUNDATION [ ] Write your niche statement using the formula above [ ] Update your LinkedIn headline to reflect the niche [ ] Update your LinkedIn About section with niche positioning [ ] Identify 50 target prospects in your niche [ ] Create a simple prospect tracking spreadsheet or Notion board DAYS 8–21: SOFT LAUNCH [ ] Begin outreach to new prospects only (existing clients are separate) [ ] Send 5–10 personalized pitches per week to niche-specific targets [ ] Join 1–2 communities where your ideal clients spend time [ ] Start posting 1x/week content relevant to your niche on LinkedIn [ ] Run 1–2 discovery calls with niche-aligned prospects DAYS 22–45: PORTFOLIO BUILD [ ] Land or start 1 niche-specific project (paid or pro bono) [ ] Document the project as a case study (problem → process → result) [ ] Publish the case study on your website or LinkedIn [ ] Request a testimonial from any completed niche project [ ] Update your website copy to reflect your niche positioning DAYS 46–75: MOMENTUM [ ] Track outreach response rates (aim for 10–20% reply rate) [ ] Refine your pitch based on what's getting traction [ ] Aim to have 3+ discovery calls with niche-aligned prospects [ ] Review your scoring matrix — do scores still feel right?
